This is also the case with depression in society today. While many individuals will state they are experiencing depression or extreme sadness, but then return home to enjoy a weekend of happiness and fun; these individuals cannot be diagnosed as suffering from severe depression. For an individual to be diagnosed as suffering from severe depression, the individual must show persistent feelings of sadness for at least one month resulting in an inability to function effectively on a daily basis.

Statistics have shown that, unfortunately, the rate of individuals suffering from anxiety disorders and depression are on a steady increase. This is detrimental as the individuals do not suffer from mental health issues only, but the associated difficulties in physical health and social well-being. It is often seen that these individuals are not able to engage with society; thus resulting in a lack of financial income or support. Fortunately, the Social Security Administration has become aware of this situation and now offers the option of disability benefits to individuals with anxiety disorders or depression.

In order to be considered for social security disability benefits, it is necessary that the individual can provide evidence of diagnosis regarding the mental health condition. In this instance, it will be necessary for the individual making an application to show medical evidence from a psychiatrist or psychologist indicating the disorder diagnosis. Furthermore, the individual must be able to prove that they are unable to maintain a full-time or part-time job and have not done so for at least 12 months as a direct result of the mental health condition. It is only based on the current income and employment history that one may apply for the social security disability benefits for anxiety disorder and depression.

While it is necessary to provide evidence of the mental health condition diagnosis, the disability benefit may still be rejected if the condition does not fall under the Social Security’s Listing of Impairments. Individuals presenting with anxiety disorders must be diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, or panic disorder for eligibility to be considered.

Individuals presenting with depression must meet the DSM-5 criteria for depression in order to be considered as qualifying under the listing of impairments; however, there is the possibility of an individual qualifying for depression disability benefits outside of the depression listing if they are granted a medical-vocational allowance. The medical-vocational allowance will grant an individual disability benefits if the symptoms of depression influence the individual’s ability to do unskilled work, such as carrying out simple instructions, making work-related decisions, responding appropriately to supervisors, and handling changes in routine.
